Terminology for nutrient intakes
Estimated average requirement (EAR) | The average requirement value of a specific nutrient for a specific population, based on given criteria (usually related to amounts required to prevent deficiency of the nutrient) |
Reference nutrient intake (RNI) | The amount of a nutrient that is enough (or more than enough) to prevent deficiency for 97% of a population, often corresponding to the EAR plus 2 SDs; previously known as recommended daily amount |
Reasonable range of intake (RRI) | The range of average intakes derived from observations or evaluated under controlled conditions that appear to sustain adequate nutrition, based on absence of abnormal clinical signs and symptoms or biochemical/functional normalcy |
