Definition of different types of ward round

Type of roundDefinition used in this study
At the trolley/by the boardThis is the time spent at the trolley (or by the patient list on a board or a computer screen) where the medical team review the clinical notes, charts, results and discuss differential diagnoses and formulate a management plan. This may or may not be combined with time at the patient's cot/bedside.
At the patient's cotside/bedsideThis is where the clinician assesses the patient, interacts with them and their parents/carers, often provides or confirms the diagnosis, advises on further investigations and explains the management plans.
A sit-down discussion round (‘grand round’)A sit-down discussion, usually involving other members of the multidisciplinary team, where patients are presented more formally and discussed in some detail.
