In health institutions, do clinical pathways (CPWs) improve patient outcomes, professional practice and hospital costs?

Review scope

Studies were selected that compared patients managed according to CPW (or a multifaceted intervention including a CPW) with patients managed with usual care. Outcomes included professional practice, patient outcomes, length of stay (LoS) and hospital costs.

Review methods

Effective Practice and Organisation of Care Register, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, the National Health Service Economic Evaluation Database and Global Health were searched for randomised controlled trials, controlled clinical trials, controlled before and after studies and interrupted time series analysis.
