Terminology for nutrient intakes

Estimated average requirement (EAR)The average requirement value of a specific nutrient for a specific population, based on given criteria (usually related to amounts required to prevent deficiency of the nutrient)
Reference nutrient intake (RNI)The amount of a nutrient that is enough (or more than enough) to prevent deficiency for 97% of a population, often corresponding to the EAR plus 2 SDs; previously known as recommended daily amount
Reasonable range of intake (RRI)The range of average intakes derived from observations or evaluated under controlled conditions that appear to sustain adequate nutrition, based on absence of abnormal clinical signs and symptoms or biochemical/functional normalcy
