Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network11: role of secondary care

• For obese children (>7 years) who can demonstrate prolonged weight maintenance and who are cared for by secondary services, modest weight loss (no more than 0.5 kg/month) is an acceptable goal
• Patients should be assessed for medical causes, and existing co-morbidities. Where these exist weight loss is indicated, and specialist referral may be appropriate
• Where there is no underlying medical cause, patients should be referred back to primary care with the maintenance/prevention message reinforced
