This National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) pathway, published in August 2014, focuses on the management of a child with a petechial rash. It is related to the 2010 NICE guideline for bacterial meningitis and meningococcal disease (CG102).1

Aims of the pathway

  • To ensure that meningococcal disease is considered as a differential diagnosis in children presenting with petechial rash, leading to prompt treatment

  • To differentiate between the management of petechial rash in a febrile versus afebrile child
