Rationale: Narrow-spectrum antimicrobial therapy is recommended for children with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in the 2011 Paediatric Infectious Diseases Society/Infectious Diseases Society of America CAP guideline. However, few studies have compared the effectiveness of narrow-spectrum and broad-spectrum antibiotics in children hospitalised with pneumonia.
Setting: Forty-three tertiary children's hospitals in the USA using data from the Pediatric Health Information System.
Patients: In total, 15 564 children aged 6 months to 18 years, hospitalised with CAP over a 6-year period fulfilled the inclusion criteria.
