Nystagmus after exposure to drugs in utero

Drug misuse during pregnancy may have increased in Scotland. National hospital discharge data show an increase from 9.3 cases of maternal drug misuse per 1000 discharges in 1996–1997 to 17.7 per 1000 in 1999–2000, but improved ascertainment may explain some or all of the increase. It is recognised, however, that these figures are an underestimate. A report from paediatric ophthalmology units in Edinburgh, and Dundee ( Alan O Mulvihill and colleagues. Br J Ophthalmol 2007;91:613–5[Abstract/Free Full Text] ) gives details of 14 children who had nystagmus when examined at a mean age of 36 months and whose mothers took opiates and/or benzodiazepines during pregnancy. Nine of the children had been exposed to both opiates and benzodiazepines, three to opiates alone, and two to benzodiazepines alone.
