Airway macrophage carbon content and lung function

The first 150 words of the full text of this article appear below.

Atmospheric pollution with particulate matter <10 µm (PM10) in aerodynamic diameter has an adverse effect on lung function in children. A major component of PM10 is black carbon, consisting of a carbon core with added trace metals and organic compounds. In adults, the amount of carbon in the lung at autopsy reflects the degree of long-term exposure to PM10. Now, a study in Leicester ( Kulkarni and colleagues. N Engl J Med 2006;355:21–30[Abstract/Free Full Text] ; also see Editorial, ibid: 78–9) has directly related reduced lung function in children to the carbon content of airway macrophages.

The study included 114 healthy children aged 8–15 years (mean 11.5 years) and nine children with asthma (mean age 13.6 years), all living in an area with annual mean levels of PM10 within UK air quality standards. Sputum was induced with nebulised 4.5% saline, and airway macrophages were examined . . . [Full text of this article]
